Port Botany

On 29 April 1770, Botany Bay was the site of James Cook’s first landing of HMS Endeavour on the continent of Australia.

Construction of Port Botany began in 1971 and opened in December 1979. The port is located less than 10km from the Sydney CBD, adjacent the largest airport in Australia and its operations impact surrounding communities which were established in the 1800s. The once pristene aquatic environment of north Botany Bay is now unrecognisable as the Port expansion nears completion.

Beach erosion, loss of migratory bird habitat and poor water quality are some of the environmental challenges facing Botany Bay. In addition there are significant noise, traffic and pollution impacts on local suburbs in three local Councils (Randwick, Botany Bay, and Rockdale), including:

  • Chifely
  • Little Bay
  • Hillsdale
  • Kyeemagh
  • Phillip Bay
  • Malabar
  • Banksmeado
  • Rockdale

The following details a relatively short history of developments in this area with regard to Port Botany impacts. This is not an exhaustive list.
