Bunnings BIG plans for Eastgardens

Botany Bay City Council has received an application from Bunnings to develop 140-148 Denison Street (map). The proposal includes:

  • Construction of a hardware and building supplies centre with a total floor area of 11,820 sqm, together with a covered outdoor nursery, café, office, amenities and loading areas;
  • Provision of 420 undercroft car parking spaces;
  • Construction of a signalised intersection and associated roadwork to facilitate access, including land dedication to Council for a left turn lane from Denison Street;
  • Hours of operation to be 7:00am to 9:00pm, Monday to Friday and 8:00am to 6:00pm Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays.

Interestingly the Traffic Impact Assessment concludes that “the development will not result in any adverse traffic impacts on the road system” (read more here), however this seems surprising given the existing congestion at the intersection of Denison and Wentworth. Both of these roads are dedicated truck corridors and truck traffic is projected to grow by 70% in 10 years!

And what of the inevitable impact on many local businesses? We’ve recently lived through the ‘grand’ opening of the IKEA superstore in Tempe, do we want MORE homogeneous shopping choices?

RELATED DOCUMENTS:

The plans are on public exhibition until 21 December 2011, (Matraville Precinct understand that an extension to 3 February for the submission period has been granted) at the Customer Services Counter, City of Botany Bay Council Offices, 141 Coward Street, Mascot, between the hours of 8.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. Monday to Friday (except public holidays) or access them here. Any person may make a submission in writing to Council in relation to the proposed development. Quote Council’s Reference Number DA11/224 in any correspondence and any person objecting to the proposal should state the land they own or occupy and the reasons for their objections.

I believe that Bunning’s if it goes ahead at mentioned location has a huge potential to hurt a lot of small business in the area, there are a large number of small business’s and larger ones around the area which have been through some very tough moments regarding trade in recent times. The Bunnings proposal could effect trade suppliers currently filling the demands of the local population, In my opinion there are many large and small business’s that provide the same products as Bunnings and they could be pushed over the edge and close down if Bunnings goes ahead in this area, I am not against competition but I am concerned about impacts on local communities trying to make any sort of profit. They have been around for many years and have also become a growing part of our local communities. My concern is should local business fold due to over amount of competition around the nearby area and the fact that we could be left with one Large group holding a monopoly around the area it could remove all the competition all together and take away the community spirit which we all are so proud to have. Protect local they have been a part of our past and should be a part of our future. . Just my view. Carlos

I personally think Bunnings coming to Eastgardens will be fantastic. Like myself, I am sure there are many families who have had to track over to Gardeners Rd to buy many things Bunnings sell. Fight for a carpark, tackle the crowds on a weekend and then line up for long periods to purchase our goods with kids screaming. This will save so much time and also provide people in the area with a large array of products the smaller shops do not stock. I personally couldn’t be happier. Bunnings put on great weekend learning programs for adults aswell as kids. Its a great way for our kids to learn more about how to do things and make things. This in turn keeps them busy and out of the parks vandalising equipment. Bring it on.

      Hi Nicole,

      You said it by yourself:
“Fight for a carpark, tackle the crowds on a weekend and then line up for long periods to purchase our goods with kids screaming”
Why do you think this Bunnings will be any different? Only difference is it will be in the middle of residential area and have great impact on local residents. The traffic and problems with parking is already visible… Now add thousands of cars trying to squeeze in on much smaller road compare to Gardeners Rd.

      Cheers,
      George

Great idea, the Mascot store is way overcrowded on the weekend. Let’s not be precious about national retailers v small shops.

Clearly a ‘preliminary strike’ against the Woolies hardware chain being rolled out “Masters”. Far better to focus on identifying a suitable site within / near Matraville if that centre needs support.

Traffic ? smaffic. Major demand will be on weekends when surrounding industrial area is not being used.

      Hi ozluap,

Nothing against Bunnings, I like them too.

However this is not a site suitable for business like Bunnings.
It’s in a middle of a very quiet residential area. It will bring too much traffic, where Denison St is just not capable coping with more cars.

      Cheers,
      George

Bunnings is busy from 7am to 9pm and not just on weekends.

The Ports run 24/7 and so does ALL the significant industry around us.

Trucks navigating these roads are carrying highly toxic chemicals and any increased traffic load will increase the risk to local resident’s and road traffic safety.

It’s also opposite a premier sporting field that’s buzzing with activity and parking chaos all year round.

Not to mention that Eastgardens’ residential streets only permit one car to pass at a time.

    THIS IS A TRAFFIC DISASTER!

AND we have access to THREE other Bunnings within a maximum 20min – Randwick, Rockdale and Mascot.

What a fantastic idea, i love Bunnings and the thought of it being located near eastgardens is great. My wife can shop for cloths whilst i shop for the things i love TOOLS and gardening equipement!

Authors of earlier comments in favour of the Bunnings proposal do not seem to be aware that there is already an excellent, easily accessible hardware store with plenty of off-street parking approximately 2km from the site Bunnings are proposing. That is the Mitre 10 (Kingsford Timber) store in Beauchamp Road.

This Mitre 10 is a great store for both tradesmen and the general public, with a huge range of QUALITY products (rather than cheap unbranded junk from China) and plenty of knowledgeable staff, many of them being ex-tradesmen or with years of experience in hardware.

This store is also community minded. They willingly support local teenagers with work experience and part-time employment opportunities; and they provide a BBQ for fund raising groups to use outside the store at weekends.

I don’t think we need a Bunnings hardware supermarket in Matraville and will be staying loyal to Mitre 10 – one of the best hardware stores in Sydney without a doubt.

    • Ross - Kingsford Mitre 10

Thanks Peter, we appreciate the support. and yes, for somebody to not think we sell tools, you have to wonder if they have had a chance to visit our store.
By the way – we now also price match Sydney tools to ensure we are sharp on serious trade tools. Thanks again for your comment.

This is a great idea. I live on Rhodes St and will be directly affected by any extra traffic and I have to say its well worth it. It seems the only argument people have these days when objecting to any development is the traffic. I’m sorry but we live in the heart of a growing major city. Demand will always mean that these sorts of developments are needed. It’s up to the local council to work with bunnings to have a proper traffic management plan in place should this go ahead. Either way it doesn’t bother me. I can push the trolley home.

Mascot seems like a million miles away on the weekends and is way too crowded. Mitre 10 is over priced with limited range for anyone who has serious stuff to do.

    • Ross - Kingsford Mitre 10

Thanks for the comment, please feel free to let us know what extra ranges you would like to see at the Mitre10 store – re pricing, we also have a price match policy, please let us know if we are dear and we’ll match it. – just out of curiosity – are you talking about our Mitre10 (Kingsford Timber ) having limited range? most Mitre10 stores are smaller than us.
      Thanks.

  8. Kelly

I like shopping at Bunnings and sometimes choose it over the closer Mitre 10 because it’s cheaper. In spite of that I don’t want it to become my corner store! How many Bunnings do we need?

Who will really benefit from this new store? Wesfarmers aint doing it for us.

“Bunnings Mascot has been bursting at the seams, with pedestrians and cars clashing over footpath space and cars spotted driving on the wrong side of Gardeners Rd to access the busy carpark.” ‘Rogue Cars Stopped’, Southern Courier, Tuesday 13 December, 2011.

Developments along Dension St are required by both State Planning and Botany Bay Council’s own DCP30 to conduct a traffic risk assessment with regard to this being a MAJOR DANGEROUS GOODS ROUTE yet the current Bunnings development application has neglected to do this. Indeed the Traffic Risk Assessment by SKM talks only of the risk from transporting dangerous goods due to Bunnings business operations. Nothing of the chlorine and hydrochloric acid tankers using this road daily.

The above mentioned Southern Courier article states “A Bunnings spokeswoman said it took safety ‘extremely seriously’”. If they did, why build a $26 million warehouse on a MAJOR DANGEROUS GOODS ROUTE which will increase the risk of serious harm to residents, Hensley Athletic Field users, Eastgardens shoppers and their own patrons?

  10. Anthony

It is really great idea. I live in Matraville and the nearest Bunning store is at Mascot / Alexandria so I welcome this idea.

    • Kellie

As I mentioned earlier, we have THREE Bunnings within a 20 minute drive and a large hardware store, Mitre 10, only a 5 minute drive. There is no NEED for a Bunnings at this location – not to mention the increased risk and unnecessary traffic impacts this development, and the proposed 20 lot subdivision by Orica across the road, will create. Yes, it would be great to clean the site up but surely the bigger picture should be about reducing risk and minimising negative impacts.

  11. Mark

All trucks from and to Port Botany should use the dedicated truck route and that is Foreshore Road.

  12. Peter

I think Bunnings are great. I really will be pleased to see one around the corner. If you lived in Smith Street and lived with Masterfoods, lived with ICI/Orica across the road you know how much better this will be.

  13. Kingsford MITRE 10 now have the full range of Stihl outdoor power equipment on sale, and are able to service a wide range of power tools and petrol products.
We are a trade store catering for the tradesman and home handy man.
I am the technician is charge of the power tools section, 30 years experience able to service and advise on all your needs.
We have an professionally equipped workshop onsite.
